Chiropractic care has gained a reputation as being a very effective treatment for back, neck and other types of pain over the years, but the benefits of chiropractic work are far more reaching than just a great pain relief technique. The importance of the our bodies nervous system and the chiropractic adjustments ability to remove interference along its pathway make it an important tool for improving your general health.

The brain controls and coordinates the myriad systems of the body through the nervous system. It has a connection to the entire body via the spinal cord which is protected inside the spine. Along the entire length of the spine from the base of the skull down to the sacrum or tailbone, spinal nerves branch off from the spinal cord and exit the spine in small openings between the joints of the spine. These spinal nerves innervate all of the organs and tissues of the body. The spinal nerves are important connections between the brain and the body and are vulnerable to irritation where they exit the spine in these small openings.

When a vertebrae looses its normal ability to move due to a misalignment from injury or chronic stresses it will irritate the surrounding nerves, this is called subluxation. Subluxation is very important to treat because of the pain it can cause and the detrimental effects to your health caused by decreased nerve function. The pain caused from a subluxation can occur in the area of the misalignment or sometimes the pain can be referred to another region further along the nerve that is affected.

Nerves in different regions of the spine serve different regions of the body. For example, nerves in the upper back have fibers that go to the lungs and heart. Lower in the back, nerves serve the digestive organs, liver, kidneys, bladder, sex organs, and other tissues. Nerves in the neck serve portions of the head and also go through the shoulders into the arms and hands. Irritation to the nerves in the neck can cause pain and or numbness in the arms and hands or may cause headaches. Nerves in the low back extend into the legs and feet and can also cause pain or numbness into the legs when nerves in the lumbar spine are irritated.

Back and neck pain is usually a warning that nerve irritation is taking place. Chiropractic adjustments gently restore normal joint function in the areas of a subluxated vertebrae, improving movement and removing the irritation to the nerve at that level, allowing the body to heal itself. Chiropractic philosophy recognizes that the body has an innate ability to heal itself if given the proper opportunity. Removing nerve interference that is caused by misalignments of the spine allows the body to function more optimally improving joint flexibility, making the areas feel better, and improving health by removing unwanted interference to your nervous systems pathways that are so important to normal body function. This is why periodic chiropractic adjustments are a good idea to help prevent future problems and to give your body a much improved opportunity at vibrant health. Chiropractic care is an important part of a healthy lifestyle along with other elements of care including proper rest, nutrition, and physical activity.
